Conservative group Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles recently came out with a billboard campaign: “El lugar mas peligroso para un Latino es el vientre de su madre”, which means “The most dangerous place for a Latino is in the womb of its mother”. The campaign is targeted at Latina mothers who are seeking to have an abortion. The degrading ad suggests that Latina women don’t know what’s best for them or for their families, when in reality Latinos are culturally family-oriented. The majority of Latinos are actually in favor of access to family planning, sex ed, and reproductive health services. About 70% of Latino respondents in a survey done by California Latinas for Reproductive Justice agreed that “while they may not choose to have an abortion themselves, they would protect that right and not take the decision away from other women.” The campaign used by this anti-abortion group works to distract the public from important issues regarding the Latino community like jobs and immigration reform.
