On Immigration Policy, Romney Shakes It Up

Grab your Mitt Romney embossed Etch-A-Sketch, because the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee has detected a change in the proverbial political winds and is preparing to double back on his controversial stance on immigration. The Republican National Committee’s Director of Hispanic Outreach Bettina Inclan stated at a press briefing earlier today that Romney was “still deciding what his position on immigration is.”

Hmm… Romney’s stance on immigration seemed pretty clear during the primaries when he was jostling with the rest of the Republican field for the mantle of least sympathetic toward the plight of our nation’s immigrant communities. Romney was pretty clear on his proposal to encourage “self-deportation” by making the lives of illegal immigrants so miserable that they would be desperate to go back home, as he was with his opposition to granting citizenship to illegal immigrants… until he wasn’t. He seemed solidly against the DREAM Act, which would establish a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants who entered the country as children and met a host of other criteria… until he wasn’t. Then he said he had never hired an illegal immigrant…until he said he did.

So get ready for another shake up of that Etch-A-Sketch! It’s election time for Mitt Romney!
