Well, first of all, there was no reduction, not one dollar reduction in taxes by virtue of having an account in Switzerland or a Cayman Islands investment. The dollars of taxes remained exactly the same. There was no tax savings at all.
BUT this doesn’t rule out the possibility that Romney participated in the IRS 2009 amnesty program for tax evaders. Remember, under the program, Americans with Swiss bank accounts were required to pay back taxes and fines, which would have effectively eliminated the tax reductions Romney received. An obvious question: Why would any one have an overseas account if not to avoid taxes? Romney could substantiate his claim, if he just released his tax returns…
