Text Message Program Helps Thousands of Union Workers Find Jobs

An innovative text messaging program has helped thousands of unemployed workers in building and construction trades to find new jobs. Powered by Revolution Messaging – a progressive digital agency in DC – the program sends out instant text alerts about jobs to people looking for work based on regional location and desired skill sets. The program was launched in 2011 by Revolution Messaging founder Scott Goodstein, the creator of President Obama’s campaign mobile program.

The International Union of Painters & Allied Trade (IUPAT), one of the partners using Revolution Messaging’s text messaging program, has found it highly useful in generating a sense of immediacy for its members who can learn about job opportunities right away on their cell phones rather than by attending union halls or checking their email – which can be problematic since many workers in this industry typically do not work a day job in front of a desk with a computer.

The program has been a serious force in combating the 17-20 percent unemployment rate in the building and trades industry and was recently awarded silver and gold in the Mobile Marketing Association’s 2012 Smarties Awards.
